It’s almost tournament time! In less than two weeks, we’ll kick off the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Sandestin, an event that’s grown from humble beginnings to become one of the most prestigious billfish tournaments in the world in just nine short years. And judging by the response we’ve gotten so far from the participants, everyone’s really excited to be back on the water and tournament fishing again.

Recent fishing reports have pointed to excellent billfishing throughout the upper Gulf of Mexico so far this season, along with good numbers of other gamefish so we’re looking forward to an action-packed tournament again this year.

Please take a few moments right now and review the rules for the Emerald Coast Classic—we’ve made every effort to make our rules both comprehensive and yet easily understood for those of us without law degrees. Most rule violations are not from a team that’s trying to be dishonest but more from a lack of understanding the rules in the first place so please review them carefully and if you have any questions be sure to bring them up at the Captain's Meeting.

Release videos are an area where most teams could use some help, so please also take a look at what’s required in terms of identifying the species and the release, shooting the boat’s GPS for the time, etc. It’s always best to have multiple cameras shooting the action—just be sure that you bring all the necessary cords in order to replay those videos on the Judge’s television in the scoring room.  This year, only the members from the team whose videos are being reviewed will be allowed in the scoring room.

And if you haven’t already made plans to bring your families with you, please do so! The Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort is an outstanding destination for the spouses and kids, with miles of white sandy beaches, plenty of pools, watersports, shopping and dining options and much more, all within the resort’s property. If you have any questions or need help with reservations or more information, please don’t hesitate to ask a member of our staff, we’re here to help.

I look forward to welcoming you and your team to the Emerald Coast Classic at Sandestin!
