Video Tips - Make that Release Count!

Be sure to show the species next to the boat.

Teams competing in the Billfish Release Division and/or Billfish Release Jackpots are required to submit a video recording of each billfish release. Here are a few tips to remember:

• The video must show the billfish next to the boat, identify the billfish species, and include the tournament’s verification object.

• Once the billfish is released, the team must record a shot of the boat’s GPS showing date and time.

• Teams are expected to provide their own video cameras and the cables necessary to view the video on a television for verification purposes.

• Cameras and scorecards are turned in together to the Video Verification Judges at Baytowne Marina (in the MOJO Bus) for teams entered in the Billfish Release Division and/or Billfish Release Jackpots.

• Be sure to have a back-up video camera and extra batteries for all cameras.

• Keep the cameras outside during the fishing hours. Cameras stowed in an air-conditioned salon tend to fog up when brought out to the cockpit.

• Attempting to zoom in on a fish is almost always a bad idea! Keep the camera set on wide angle and you’ve got a better chance of getting the shot you need.

• Assign a crewmember to operate the team’s camera, and make sure they are familiar with its operation before a billfish is on the line.

• Talk to us. While the video is being shot go ahead and mention the name of the boat, the angler, mates and anything else of interest. Many of the release videos make their way to our website and having narrative adds to the action.
