Fish Every Day as a Tournament

Rigging Bait

September 20, 2012 | Sam White

The offshore fishing in the upper Gulf of Mexico continues to be very good throughout the summer, and even though most of the big tournaments have already come and gone, it's never too early to start practicing for next season.

One concept that works very well is to fish every day like it's a tournament. Start by putting together the same team you intend to fish with in next year's events, from mates and captains to anglers. Then run the same spreads with the same attention to detail as you would with a half-million dollars on the line.

Practice with your video cameras. Fish the same long hours, and really put your hearts into it. At the end of the trip you'll see what's being done well and also notice some areas for possible improvement, and that could mean all the difference in winning or losing. Give it a shot and see for yourself.
