The ECBC is one of the top billfish tournaments in the world but it’s also part of several additional sportfishing competitions for the top teams, captains and anglers along the way. Here’s a recap of how the ECBC plays a part in these competitions.
The Gulf Coast Triple Crown
Along with tournaments in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, the ECBC plays a prominent role in the Gulf Coast Triple Crown, a series that one captain called the most difficult achievement in Gulf Coast sportfishing. This year, the Sea Mixer, owned by Ronald Davis and captained by Devin Potts, was victorious in the Triple Crown. They earned the most points among the five-tournament series. The Reel Worthless, captained by Myles Colley, finished second in the points race, due in large part to their 594.9-pound blue marlin landed during this year’s ECBC. InTheBite Captain of the Year Cup
InTheBite Magazine formed its Captain of the Year award in 2003 as a way to formally recognize the accomplishments of those professional captains who had an outstanding tournament season. In 2014 the award expanded to include five worldwide geographic divisions: East Coast, Gulf Coast, International, Hawaii and Florida. The ECBC played a prominent role in this year’s Gulf Coast competition, with Done Deal’s Capt. Jason Buck winning by just a slim 50-point margin over the second place captain, Devin Potts from the Sea Mixer. The Done Deal was the Top Release Team in this year’s ECBC. Congratulations to all the captains competing in the Gulf Coast division of the Captain of the Year Cup! For more information and standings, visit www.inthebite.com/captain-of-the-year-cup/.
Offshore World Championship
Each year, the winning team from the ECBC has the opportunity to represent the tournament at the Offshore World Championship, an event that attracts international teams from around the world. This year, the Done Deal team will have a shot at the championship title based on their Top Release Team win in the ECBC. The 2015 OWC will be held in Quepos, Costa Rica April 12-17 and features a unique format where teams rotate vessels each day for the four-day tournament. They are also required to use IGFA-rated line to further level the playing field. Last year the OWC hosted nearly 65 teams and the fishing was red-hot. World Billfish Series
Every year since its inception, the ECBC has been sanctioned by the World Billfish Series. This year, the ECBC’s top WBS Angler was Steve Brown, who landed the 594.9-pound blue marlin on the Reel Worthless. Steve will have the opportunity to compete in the WBS Grand Championships, usually scheduled for the end of 2015 (date and location to be announced). Visit www.wbs.com for more information.
