Charity Begins at the Docks

From the very first tournament in 2003, the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic has been committed to giving back—to the sport as well as the Panhandle communities that surround the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, the host facility. With a brace of new records set this year, including 85 teams and $1,952,270 in cash prizes—both historic highs—the tournament was again able to make significant gifts to its designated charities for the 2016 season.

Vertical Leap

LeBron James and the Cavaliers brought an NBA Championship home to Cleveland earlier this month. This past weekend, Rise Up, a Destin-based Viking 54, made a vertical leap of its own by scaling the largest blue marlin of the 14th annual Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic, earning the Grand Champion title and the biggest chunk of the record $1.95 million in overall prize money. Rusty Skalla of Savannah, Georgia, is the boat’s owner.
