One of the founding cornerstones of the ECBC was that it would have a significant and lasting impact through charitable contributions, both in the tournament sportfishing world and also within the local seaside communities surrounding the Sandestin Golf and Beach Club in Florida’s scenic Panhandle.
In 2015 those founding tenets carried through to the distribution of charitable funds to many worthwhile beneficiaries. The Billfish Foundation received $5,000 to continue their conservation and tagging programs around the world, while Reel Life International raised over $3,000 during the ECBC for the impoverished in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Closer to home, Harvest House received over $18,000 to help feed the less fortunate in the Destin area. And the Sandestin Foundation for Kids also received $3,000 to continue their local youth-oriented programs.
“There’s so much more to the ECBC than just a fishing tournament,” says director Adam Alfonso. “We believe strongly in our sense of place within the community, both here in Destin and throughout the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. And if we can help others along the way then we will at every opportunity.” Alfonso also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the tournament participants, sponsors, volunteers, staff and others who helped make these contributions possible. “Without this effort there would be no tournament and no charitable support so thank you all for making this happen. We look forward to another great year in 2016,” he concluded.
